YOUTH...Start Your Engines For 2008
To start the year off the Youth will be at the Farm Show on Saturday,
January 5th. Make sure you stop by the State Grange Booth and say "Hi!"
Also in January, we will be having our planning meeting so if there are
flat tires or oil changes that need to be done please let me know so we
can plan for the year (If there is something that you would like to see
the Youth do, please let me or one of the Committee know).
Youth members, you could do the program at your February meeting and do
one of our contests and then you will have some entries for State Grange
Session. Have a baking contest at the meeting where everybody brings
cookies or cakes. Have them judged and then you will also have
refreshments.
March 14-16, 2008 we will be having Young Marrieds/Young Adults Weekend
at State College. Please check out the information about the weekend (on
the application form to the right). We love having non-Grangers come and
enjoy the weekend. There will be workshops and fun games, as well as
fellowshipping with new and old friends.
April will be a busy month for me. I do a bus trip to Dresden, Ohio, the
"Basket Capital" of the world. It is April 18-19. The bus leaves
Duncannon at 5:00 a.m. If anybody, young or old, would like to go,
please let me know. We give away a lot of baskets, play games and
generally have a lot of fun.
Also in April, we will be attending our Eastern Regional Youth
Conference in Greeneville, TN. Anybody can participate, but the 1st
place winners in Public Speaking are to go to represent Pennsylvania. I
am including some additional information from the National Grange Youth
Director, Cindy Greer following my article.
Just an FYI...the National Grange has a new Youth Contest - Creative
Writing Contest. This is a National Contest only.
Everybody likes a nice new shiny car, so Youth, get out there and
promote the Grange to let the people know there is a nice shiny Grange
in their area (hopefully, new for them).
Thank you,
Martha
Eastern Regional Youth Conference is scheduled for April 11-13, 2008.
The location is in Greene County, Tennessee (bordering North Carolina
and within 50 miles of Virginia). The camp is in Greeneville, Tennessee
- at Interstate RT 81. I-81 runs north into New York through
Pennsylvania.
The camp has nice cabins - 5 cabins sleeping 16 people each. They are
heated and air conditioned. There is also a nice building with kitchen
facilities and a dining area for over 100 people. This building also has
a room upstairs for meetings and some sleeping accommodations. There is
a fire pit with benches in a circle for about 80 people. They also have
an open pavilion with picnic tables and a children's play area, but it
is some distance from the dining hall and cabins. The shower and bath
facilities are in a building that is in the center of the sleeping
cabins.
It is easy to find, is very private, and is in a beautiful mountain
setting. A bus could easily travel to the camp. There are no overhead
power lines, etc. to try to navigate around.
There is also a lake, but April is a little cool. There is a softball
field as well as volleyball and basketball courts down the hill from the
cabins.
More information will be sent out to Youth Directors in the near future.
I hope to see lots of people this year.
Hope you had a Happy New Year.
