Shavers Creek Grangers
learn the ropes of TV news business
Shavers Creek Grange met
Feb. 18 at the Bethel Presbyterian Church, Petersburg,
R.R., for a chicken and waffles dinner, accompanied by
many delicious desserts.
The Grangers were joined by WTAJ TV 10 News reporters
Adam Paluka and Andrew Capasso. The reporters shared the
evening’s program, explaining what they do. The men
explained that although they are only on the television
screen for a short time each day, they usually have a
busy day and are on call 24 hours a day. Both Paluka and
Capasso reside in the State College area, but cover
several counties for news and stories. They said viewer
comments are welcomed and they always appreciate the
opportunity to get acquainted with the people in the
surrounding communities. The Grangers appreciated the
opportunity to meet the men and talk with them about
their work as reporters.

Shavers Creek Grange Master Laura
McCardle, center, welcomed
WTAJ TV 10 News reporters Adam Paluka, left, and Andrew
Capasso, right, to a recent meeting.
Laura McCardle called the
business meeting to order for the evening and reports
were presented by various committees.
Legislative chair Ross
Metz reported that open records legislation passed the
Pennsylvania Senate unanimously, but it was kicked
around by the House of Representatives before it went
back to the Senate for its approval with minor changes.
Next, Governor Rendell signed it into law and President
Bush signed a stimulus package to spur the economy, but
it won’t go into effect until May or June.
Many of the Pennsylvania
State Grange policies have gone on to become National
Grange policies. National Grange will not let
legislators forget about immigration reform, health
care, food safety, education costs and mine safety, to
name a few. Highways and bridges are not overlooked
either.
Family Activities chair
Beverly Fitzgerald reported members have been busy
making baby caps, soldier caps and will also be making
ABC baby quilts.
Community Service chair
Brenda Coy thanked members for bringing items for the
baskets for PRIDE, to be auctioned on the PRIDE Telethon
in March. Grangers will assemble three baskets and each
one will include a Grange cookbook. Items were sorted
and placed in baskets during the meeting.
State Grange is planning
four picnics to be held across Pennsylvania in June. The
picnic scheduled for June 21 will be held at the
pavilion at the Bethel Presbyterian Church.
Shavers Creek Grange also
received a letter from the Redbud Quilt Guild inviting
them to participate in the quilt show at the Huntingdon
Community Center in April.
