Each of us, at one time or another, has had something that triggers a fond
memory. Sometimes that memory wasn’t so funny at the time but looking back
years later, it is funny now. Each fall when I start working on apples, I
recall my son’s love of apple butter.
My older son, who is now forty-eight, was only two years old when his
maternal grandmother made apple butter. We were living with my parents at
the time. He had to have apple butter on his buttered bread at every meal.
This particular evening we were eating with my in-laws. My son did not eat
his buttered bread and my mother-in-law commented on it. When it was
explained that he liked apple butter on his bread, she remarked that she had
some in the refrigerator. She got it out and apple butter was put on my
son’s bread. He took one bite, looked over the side of the high chair,
dropped the apple butter bread on the floor, and spit the bite in his mouth
on the floor, also. My mother-in-law’s apple butter was store bought! To
this day, whenever I’m making apple butter, I remember my son likes home
made apple butter only!
On a more serious note, it is time for the State Session and your Family
Activities Chairman is gathering all the entries to bring to the Session.
The following are reminders of what to send:

All first place entries from your Pomona.
-
ALL entries pertaining to quilting; classes 30, 31,
35, 36, 37, 38, 67, and 68.
-
All canceled stamps.
-
All raffle stubs and money.
REMINDER: NO STRAIGHT PINS IN YOUR ENTRY. You may enter as many contests as
you wish, only ONE in each class.
First prize - $20; second prize - $15; and third prize - $10.
DO NOT SEND: the following items are to be distributed within your community
but noted on your report.
-
Stuffed toys.
-
ABC or crib quilts.
-
Preemie hats and booties.
-
Lap robes or afghans.
-
Wheelchair and walker bags.
-
TLC shoeboxes.

Personal care items and bags.
IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THE PERSON BRINGING YOUR ENTRIES STAYS WITH THE ENTRIES
UNTIL THEY ARE CHECKED IN! For reasons unknown to the Family Activities
Department, not all entries reported on your entry forms arrive at the
session.
A reminder that food entries must have the recipe taped to the bottom of the
entry.
Judges are chosen from the surrounding area of the State Session. As you may
have noticed, the various notations under the classes state "general
appearance." As with any judging, appearance plays a large part in the eyes
of the beholder.
At the Family Festival this summer, the purses the Family Activities
sponsored were a hit. Seeing the pleased expressions on the faces of the
sewers while making their purses, I couldn’t help wondering how many
Grangers would go home and make another for their daughter, granddaughter,
or female friend.
From the responses on the evaluations of the Family Festival, more crafts
are wanted. The Family Activities Department is interested in what you would
like to make. What have you seen at craft fairs or made yourself that you
think would be an idea for the Family Festival? Contact your Regional Family
Activities Director or Ginny Mangel with your ideas. At the planning session
in January, we will be choosing craft(s) for Family Festival so it is
imperative that you share your ideas promptly.
For your added enjoyment at this year’s State Session, you will have
“Breakfast with Twinkles.” As the hotel only has space to seat one hundred
fifty, you must be sure to sign up when making your reservations.
In the box returning from this year’s Session will be fliers with the 2008
contests. If you would tack this flyer to the bulletin board in your Grange,
it will be handy for members to refer to.
SEE YOU IN WILLIAMSPORT!!!
RECIPES, RECIPES AND MORE RECIPES
The Family Activities Department is going to make up a small cookbook that
will be used next summer at the Family Festival. So...we are asking people
from all over the state to submit some recipes for this book. Pick out your
favorite recipes and send them to the state director or bring them to State
Session. This will be the latest that they will be received. This is NOT a
state cookbook, it is just a fun cookbook for the Festival in 2008. Join us
and share in our fun.
