The State Grange Youth has just lost one of our own...Jonathan Sattazahn from Berks Co. He was a great friend, hard worker, and always willing to help where he was needed. He represented the Youth well as our Youth Ambassador. He will be missed. The Youth Department would like to make a $100.00 donation to the State Scholarship fund in memory of Jonathan.

Stay active in your Grange or get active if you're not already. Our lives are too short not to make a difference in our county, state or community. The Grange can help you make a difference. We have a lot to offer. Come find out.

March will be our Young Marrieds/Young Adults Weekend. Go to page 6 (turn the page) and fill out the registration form NOW! "START YOUR ENGINES!" Bring a new friend along and get $10 back from your registration.

Mark it on your calendar - March 14, 15 & 16, 2008 at the Sleep Inn in State College.

Jonathan Nick Sattazahn
Born: July 16, 1989
Died: October 18, 2007

Jonathan “Heifer” Sattazahn, 18, of Hamburg, passed away on Thursday morning, October 18, 2007 as a result of a vehicle crash. Jonathan is survived by his parents Nick R. and Nancy L. (Roth) Sattazahn and his brother Joshua R. Sattazahn.

Jonathan was a “lifelong” member of the Grange, first joining Marion Junior Grange #344 in Berks County prior to “graduating” to Kutztown Grange #1836 when he turned 14 years old. While in Junior Grange, Jonathan held every office available.

His service to the Grange and his community began while at Marion Junior Grange and peaked (as a Junior Granger) in July 2004 when he was selected as the PA State Grange Junior Prince at Junior Camp for 2004-2005.

As a member of the PA State Grange Youth and a Youth Camp participant, he was selected as the PA State Grange Male Youth Advocate in 2005 and in 2006 he was chosen as the PA State Grange Male Youth Ambassador for 2006-2007, turning over that title this past July. As last year’s Youth Ambassador, he would have represented the PA State Grange Youth at this year’s National Grange Convention in Reno, Nevada in November.

Jonathan was a 2007 graduate of Hamburg Area High School where he was an honor student. He received the Outstanding Senior Award in carpentry and the Teacher’s Award. He was an avid bowler and while in high school received varsity letters in bowling and track. He was a member of St. Michael’s Church, Tilden Township, as well as the Northern Berks 4-H Dairy Club. He had a passion for dairy animals and took pride in showing his dairy cows at Berks County Fairs.

His love of dairy cattle led to his nickname “Heifer.” This moniker fit him well as could be seen every time he greeted friends with his infectious smile and his “heifer hug.” He would even introduce himself as, “Hi, I’m ‘Heifer.’ ‘Cow’ will work. too.”

Jonathan worked full-time as an assembler of specialty batteries at Deka East Penn Manufacturing, Lyons and part-time for Francis L. Werley, Inc. Service Station, Ridge Lawn, Windsor Township.
“Seen through the eyes of Faith, we remember our Brother not as one dead – he has only gone on before us through the gates of the Grange Above, where dwells the Great Master of us all.” (Taken from the Ceremony for Draping Grange Charter.)
