Leadership Tip-Archives

February, 2003 - Using Rules as Enablers

Rules in the Grange consist of the National Grange Digest,  your State By-Laws, and your Grange’s By-Laws. They are the framework within which your Community Grange can grow

and prosper. When you find a rule you believe needs to be changed, we have a process of writing resolutions to initiate that change.

As a leader you need to view rules as ways to enable your members to accomplish the Grange’s vision. Don’t look at rules as obstacles outlining what you can’t do, but as guidelines for what you can do. Within our By-Laws there are just as many “Thou shalt’s” as “Thou shalt not’s”

When your Grange discusses new projects and activities, they will not normally be in either column of shalt’s. Take the view that your Grange’s By-Laws are the foundation of what the

Grange is and that they enable your members to accomplish amazing things that lead to Grange growth. Encourage your members to find new ways of doing things.

Look at your Grange rules in a new way and watch them enable your members!

Are you setting goals for yourself? If not, start today. Setting goals is the first step in changing visions into reality.
