GIVE UP SOMETHING YOU’RE GOOD AT
|
by Ed Luttrell
National Grange Director of Leadership and Membership
Are you not sure about how to start real team building in your own
Grange? Changing the attitudes of your fellow members can be difficult
and sometimes seems impossible. However, it always starts with you and
your actions as a leader. Start building a team by giving up something
you’re good at.
Find something in your Grange that you like doing and that everyone
recognizes you are good at getting done. It may be something you’ve done
for years. Find a member who would be willing to take on the task you
are used to doing. Ask them who they want to have on their team, maybe
even include a new member or nonmember. Then step back and only help if
they ask for it.
This is one of the most difficult things you can do as a leader. After
all, they may not do it the way you’ve always done it. They may even
foul it up in some way. If you show your team that you have truly given
them authority and that you have confidence in them, you are on the way
to building a team.
Give up something you’re good at and become a better leader in your
Grange!
