Create An Atmosphere

by Ed Luttrell
National Grange Director of Leadership and Membership

Ever wonder why astronauts wear space suits in space? It’s because we die when there is no atmosphere. The same lesson applies to our Grange members, with the exception that they don’t die, they leave. As a Grange leader you need to create an atmosphere that promotes growth in your members and in the Grange. There are two components you can use in creating a new or better atmosphere in your Grange.
You create an atmosphere with your words. Use words that are positive; can rather than can’t, will rather than won’t, yes rather than no. Also use words that look forward; tomorrow rather than yesterday, plans rather than the past. Be sure to use words like “thanks” regularly and always encourage members to offer ideas.
You also create an atmosphere with non-verbal methods. Make sure that your body language matches your words. Smile! You could make a poster that has your Grange goals listed. Put up something in your hall that promotes fun. Show your confidence in your teams by staying out of their way. Even brag to other Granges about what your members are accomplishing by working together.
Become a better leader by creating a positive atmosphere in your Grange!
