RE:  PA State Grange Dairy Committee Sets Policy on Pooling of Over-Order Premium

The Pennsylvania State Grange Dairy Committee met recently to adopt policy on the issue of pooling of the Over-Order Premium for milk.

The Over-Order Premium is established by the PA Milk Marketing Board to assist dairy farmers whose milk is produced, processed, and sold as fluid milk in PA.  This covers only about 17 percent of all milk sold in the Commonwealth.

The Dairy Committee approved policy to “equitably distribute the over order premiums to all Pennsylvania dairy farmers.”  A large quantity of the milk produced in PA is used in processing of cheese, butter, ice cream, and other dairy foods.  Dairy farmers do not currently receive the premium on this milk, only on their milk that is sold in bottles or cartons.  The PA Grange Dairy Committee felt that all dairy farmers produce milk to meet the supply and demand of the market in PA; therefore all dairy farmers should benefit from the Over-Order Premium regardless of the use of their milk.

The Grange is a grassroots organization with all policy developed from the local level through the county and state Granges.  With this action of the PA State Grange Dairy Committee, comprised of members from all areas of the Commonwealth, the PA State Grange now has established policy which will be supported before the PA Milk Marketing Board or the Legislature if they choose to consider new regulations or legislation governing distribution of the Over-Order Premium on milk.

The Grange is a family fraternal organization dedicated to the betterment of the American quality of life through community service, education, legislation and fellowship.  The Grange includes members of all ages from their Junior Grange (ages 5-14), Youth Members (ages 14-23), Young Adults (ages 21-35) and Regular Community (local) members (age 14 and up).  The Grange represents approximately 15,000 Pennsylvanians across the Commonwealth.  It is the oldest agricultural and rural advocacy organization of its kind in the United States.  The National Grange (Patrons of Husbandry), representing about 300,000 members, began in 1867 and the PA State Grange was chartered in 1873.
