CURWENSVILLE - "Susquehanna Community Grange #2106" is the official name of the newly formed Grange in Curwensville, Clearfield County. It is the fourth new Grange chartered in Pennsylvania in the past 5 years.
Curwensville Grange Charter Members The newly formed Grange met for its organizational meeting on Tuesday, April 13, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. in the Curwensville Community Center at 11 Stadium Drive in town. 16 people signed on as "Charter Members," those members who were the first to get the local community Grange formed. The Susquehanna Community Grange #2106 joins eight other Granges in Clearfield County. The meeting was led by Carl Meiss, PA State Grange Membership/Public Relations Director who was assisted by Lorena Baughman, a Deputy State Grange Master from Blair County. After officially opening the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and opening a Bible, Meiss gave attendees a brief history and overview of The Grange, Patrons of Husbandry. He informed everyone that there had, in fact, been a Grange in Curwensville, Susquehanna Grange #1145, which was chartered March 5, 1896 but which closed in October 1996. The first order of business was for Mr. Meiss to officially "Welcome/Obligate" the 16 in attendance as Grange members. These new members then voted on a name for the new Grange, settling on "Susquehanna Community Grange #2106". The actual name is decided upon by the members and the new Grange is then numbered consecutively by the State Grange office. Therefore this new Grange is the 2106th Grange ever chartered in Pennsylvania, with approximately 270 open today. Deputy Baughman then assisted Meiss in holding official elections for three required officers to meet the National Granger Charter Application requirements: Master/President; Lecturer/Program Director, and; Secretary. Peggy Redden of Curwensville, who was responsible for the idea of starting a new Grange and who had organized the meeting, was elected as the first Master/President of Susquehanna Community Grange #2106. Chrsitine Kephart, also from Curwensville, was elected as Lecturer/Program Director and Rob Redden (Peggy's husband) was elected as Secretary. Meiss also suggested that they elect a Treasurer so that an account could be opened as soon as possible for the new Grange. Eva Jean Komonczi of Curwensville was elected to that office. The Susquehanna Community Grange #2106 will meet the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the Curwensville Community Center. The public is invited to attend any of their meetings and anyone may join this new Grange. At their April 19 meeting, they intended to elect the remainder of the required 13 officers of a Grange. The Grange is a family fraternal organization dedicated to the betterment of the American quality of life through community service, education, legislation and fellowship. The Grange includes members of all ages from their Junior Grangers (ages 5-14), Youth Members (ages 14-23), Young Adults (ages 21-35) and Regular Community (local) members (age 14 and up). The Grange represents approximately 12,000 Pennsylvanians across the Commonwealth. It is the oldest agricultural and rural advocacy organization of its kind in the United States. The National Grange (Patrons of Husbandry), representing about 150,000 members, began in 1867 and the PA State Grange was chartered in 1873. 20 Erford Road, Suite 216 Lemoyne, PA 17043 1-800-552-3865
